Back Into The Heart Of Europe

Date: April 10, 2023
Approximate GPS Location: (46.36°N, 14.09°E)

It was only a brief journey through Montenegro for Hélary and Schiettecatte “but it was enough for us to fall under its spell,” they wrote. They cycled through in glorious sunshine, though some of the hills and mountains were draped in snow.

Next, it was on to Croatia and the famous tourist city of Dubrovnik. It was off-season so they had the streets largely to themselves and enjoyed spotting locations used to film Game of Thrones.

After Dubrovnik they took the Ciro Trail from Croatia into Bosnia and Herzegovina, stopping at another famous tourist city, Mostar. The trail there was incredible, following an old railway line and featuring dark, hand-dug tunnels. The surface was sometimes asphalt and sometimes gravel, making it quite a challenge on their bikes.

Then it was rapidly on to Sarajevo and the Srebrenica Massacre Museum, after which they needed a distraction from “the horrors of war” They decided to take a cable car up to the old 1984 Winter Olympic bobsleigh track.

The pair are now in Slovenia and enjoying the scenery on Lake Bled.
