Marie and Nil Hop Between Bulgaria and Serbia; Now Setting Off Towards the Black Sea

Date: January 11, 2020
Approximate GPS Location: (42.75°N, 24.40°E)

Marie and Nil celebrated Christmas in Bulgaria. They were welcomed in by a local family for a Christmas Eve meal and appreciated the chance to celebrate despite being so far from their own families.

Next, the pair took a detour on route to Istanbul, passing out of Bulgaria to check out Serbia. They experienced more great hospitality in Serbia and were even gifted some firecrackers to scare away wolves and bears!

But it was only a fleeting visit before crossing back into Bulgaria. They wanted to visit the famous Belogradchik stones and fortress. These stones come in a range of hues and feature prominently in local myths and fables.

Having marvelled at Belogradchik, Marie and Nil hit the trail again. They joined the Kom Emine, a long-distance hiking trail that follows the ridgeline of the Balkan Mountains from Serbia to the Black Sea at Cape Emine. They will follow this trail for a few weeks before breaking away to head south into Turkey.

Along the route, they are staying in mountain lodges. Most have been comfortable, and some have included fantastic company, but they also came across an eerie-looking abandoned hut that had been slowly stripped of anything of value.

Most recently, they have climbed the 7,211ft Mount Vezhen. It was a tough hike, involving “crawling, jumping and maintaining the trail.”
