Deep Snow and Buried Shelters in Bosnia

Date: April 05, 2019
Approximate GPS Location: (43.64°N, 18.18°E)

Marie and Nil have headed into the Prenj mountain range, sometimes referred to as the Bosnian Himalayas. The pair were warned by locals that it might be too dangerous at this time of year, but after some exhaustive research, they decided that they were confident enough in the weather to continue.

It was bitterly cold and they had to wade through deep snow but they were ultimately pleased with their decision, describing the mountain range as “sumptuous and without particular difficulty.” However, they were forced to earn each nights sleep, in one instance they had to dig for an hour and a half to get into a partially buried shelter.

Emerging from the high passes they made it to the village of Lukomir on the slopes of the Rakitnica River Gorge. Only 30 residents are listed as residing there, but at this time of year, the village appeared completely empty. Not wishing to disturb anyone who might still be tucked up at home, Marie and Nil spent the night in a hayloft.
