Through the Accursed Mountains to Albania
Marie and Nil accidentally picked up another guest as they approached the town of Plav in Montenegro. Once again a friendly dog decided to tag-along on their hike. Fearing that it would get lost in the mountains if it strayed too far, they tried everything to get rid of it. They pretended to throw stones and tried to scare it away but it proved incredibly persistent. Eventually, they admitted defeat and allowed it to join the team.
Soon, they emerged from Biogradska Gora National Park with the dog following behind and were looking for a place to rest and dry off. They were lucky to be invited into a family home and their luck continued when the family volunteered to adopt the friendly pooch!
On May 8 they were joined by a planned guest, Morgane. An old friend, Morgane joined for a week as they headed toward the border with Albania. They passed through a number of villages and experienced some great hospitality as they left Montenegro, hiking into Albania through the evocatively named Accursed Mountains.
In Albania, they hiked from Valbone to Theth. The high pass was still snowy and the trio had to use crampons and ice axes to progress. Soon after, Morgane departed back to her home in Singapore and Marie and Nil took some time out from their quest to relax near Lake Shkoder as the weather for Albania's mountains looked dire. They were also joined by more guests, four of them this time! Nil's family arrived in force, with his father, mother-in-law, brother and sister all coming to join the adventure for a week.
Already the group have enjoyed being invited into Albanian homes for huge cooked meals and plenty of rakija (fruit brandy)!
