Arnaud Maldague

Volcanoes and Hurricanes in the Caribbean

Date: August 18, 2021
Approximate GPS Location: (12.45°N, 61.49°W)

Arnaud Maldague’s quest has been stalled in the Caribbean since early November 2020. Though Maldague has been unable to move on due to closed borders and COVID restrictions, he has kept himself busy and experienced some dramatic weather.

Based on his boat just off the island of Carriacou in the Grenadines, he has been working on repairs and taking on odd jobs here and there. The most important repair job was to fix the cutlass bearing that holds the propeller shaft in place.

This repair usually requires lifting the boat fully out of the water, “a costly and time-consuming operation.” Instead, Maldague worked for 10 days to repair it himself, working underwater with self-made tools. He was successful and saved himself considerable time and money.

It is hurricane season in the Caribbean and already five named storms have passed by. The most serious of these, at least on Carriacou, was Hurricane Elsa. Elsa passed just north of Maldague’s position. Fortunately, Carriacou is well protected by mangrove forests and the boat didn’t suffer any damage.

As well as storms, there has been a volcanic eruption! A volcano on nearby Saint Vincent erupted in April and showered Maldague’s boat in ash, a strange phenomenon but thankfully harmless.
