‘Swing Set’ Journey Finally Links Sailboat And Journey From The Arctic

Date: July 25, 2019
Approximate GPS Location: (16.52°N, 88.40°W)

It was just an 81mi stretch of land (well, 118mi, as Maldague later discovered). This was all that was separating him from the furthest point he had reached in his journey from the Arctic and where he is currently moored and working on his sailboat. He has not linked up with his previous path since last February.

And what links these two major phases of his journey? A swing set. When Maldague completed the cycling leg of his journey in Belize City last February, he ended up at a swing set where his friends Victor and Martin swung with him on a swing built for three.

Maldague is currently moored in Placencia, Belize and he says that it is too difficult to anchor in Belize City. So he found the swing set in Belize City and then cycled this 118mi from Belize City to Placencia. The only problem was that since he had underestimated the distance, and since he departed Belize City around noon, his journey turned out to be an overnight cycle ride that took him 24 hours. Without any overnight gear, he said that he "[slept] a few hours here and there, in the Savannah or on benches."

Moored in Placencia now (for the bulk of the time since February he had been moored in Rio Dulce, Guatemala), Maldague appears to still be refurbishing his sailboat. This is all in advance of a planned great sail adventure across the Caribbean. He has also been focusing on his Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign which at 7 days remaining has reached 55% of its goal.
