Stuck in Jamaica; COVID-19 Shuts Down the Caribbean
As expected, Maldague’s progress through the Caribbean has been halted by the COVID-19 virus.
On March 22, Maldague reported that the Dominican Republic (his planned next destination) had elected to close its borders. Puerto Rico was another potential destination, however, though its borders were still open the country had recently announced a nationwide lockdown. He’d have to sail even further if he wished to leave Jamaica soon.
By early April, most countries had closed their borders and Maldague was effectively trapped. Fortunately, most businesses in Jamaica remain open and there is no enforced lockdown. He has taken the opportunity to gather parts for the boat and to make some more repairs.
At present, he is not sure where his next destination will be, or when he’ll be able to depart.
