Having sailed to Guadeloupe, Maldague had to bide his time waiting for the weather to co-operate. Storms out in the Atlantic delayed his departure but he was soon on his way towards the island of Martinique.

Maldague sailed on the Atlantic side of Dominica. He feared that sailing in the other direction might lead to a tricky voyage, with Dominica’s mountains blocking the wind. Leaving Les Saintes, he took the long route round, ensuring he kept 12 nautical miles from Dominica, as required by their COVID restrictions.

By September 28, he was able to angle south in excellent conditions, “small waves, good wind, a beautiful sun.” However, this didn’t last. Crossing the Dominica channel he fought alternating storms and dead zones, completely devoid of wind.

It took three hours to sail through but Maldague arrived in St Pierre, Martinique on September 29. Since arriving, Maldague has taken some time to explore the island with friends. Most recently, they headed up the island’s highest point, Mont Pele.
