Arnaud Maldague

Cycling through the rice paddies of Suriname and Guyana

Date: December 17, 2022
Approximate GPS Location: (6.80°N, 58.15°W)

Arnaud Maldague’s sailing journey through the Caribbean took far longer than expected but he finally arrived in South America in mid-November.

On November 17 he arrived in Suriname after six good sailing days. “This sailing part of the trip came to an end the same way it started: on a river,” Maldague wrote. His sailing journey had started on the Rio Dulce in Guatemala and finally ended on the Suriname River.

A few days later he was able to start part six of his quest, a 1,200km (745 miles) cycle ride from Paramaribo (Suriname’s capital), to Boa Vista in Brazil. By December 7 he crossed the Guyanese border, making good progress through very flat landscapes. “I cycled through hundreds of kilometers [of rice fields] during the last few days…which makes it easy for me to cycle,” Maldague wrote.

He is now in Georgetown, Guyana with only 700km (435 miles) left to Boa Vista.
