Arnaud Maldague

Between Iowa and Illinois

Date: September 26, 2018
Approximate GPS Location: (40.96°N, 90.95°E)

Maldague is on the Mississippi kayaking portion of his human-powered, north-south crossing of the Americas and is currently on the stretch that forms the border between Iowa and Illinois. He has been observing the unique characteristics of barges and has befriended a fisherman named James, 68.

James is a real character and one of the few cases of a fisherman working for himself on the river. As Maldague explains, besides the age difference, the two of them have a lot in common, including the fact that James has also taken boats up and down the length of the Mississippi and has also been to Manaus, Brazil on the Amazon, where Maldague plans to go.
