Butter Runs Through Turkmenistan’s Empty Capital, Enters Final Phase

Date: September 02, 2019
Approximate GPS Location: (33.98°N, 118.46°W)

Having survived some sweaty midnight runs in the Middle-East, Butter flew through Istanbul for the ninth time in nine weeks on his way to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan is a quirky place and he found the capital almost devoid of life. Aside from glass, the only building material allowed in central Ashgabat is white marble. Butter likened the city to a “pristine apocalyptic space station on earth.” The huge eight-lane roads were empty, allowing him to run down the middle of the streets with locals Kumush and Kerim. He only spent 48 hours in Turkmenistan before flying back to Istanbul on his way home to the UK.

The Turkmenistan marathon marked the end of phase 12 of his quest, with just phase 13 to go before he completes his final marathon in Greece. Phase 13 required a quick pit-stop in the UK to collect yet another new passport and some more visas before he flew over to the USA for a West Coast road-trip and a well-earned break. Butter visited Las Vegas, Yosemite national park and San Francisco over the next seven days, before celebrating his 30th birthday on Venice Beach in Los Angeles.

Only 26 countries now remain for Butter: three in Africa, five in the Middle East, two in Eastern Asia, 14 Pacific islands and finally Portugal and the final marathon into Athens, Greece.
