Salopek on the Doorstep of Mandalay
Date: March 17, 2020
Approximate GPS Location: (22.14°N, 96.10°E)
Along the banks of the Irrawaddy River, Salopek continues to see fragments of Myanmar’s past.
Speaking to farmers, he has been shown treasures unearthed from their fields, and as he neared the city of Mandalay, he was shown a giant 200,000-pound iron bell, cast early in the 19th century by King Bodawpaya.
Together with his walking partner Japha Se, Salopek recently crossed the river by boat to explore an ancient Merchants’ port just outside of the former capital city. He should arrive in Mandalay soon.
