Salopek Meets the Colorful Inhabitants of Assam

Date: August 30, 2019
Approximate GPS Location: (26.13°N, 91.73°E)

Salopek's long journey through the Indian sub-continent continues through the north-eastern state of Assam. A land of plains and river valleys, the state is famous for its tea and silk.

As he has traveled, Salopek has encountered many inquisitive locals: an itinerant pillow and mattress stuffer using a tight wire to announce his services, farmers pounding rice, and Assam dancers rubbing shoulders with silk road weavers in the city of Guwahati on the banks of the Brahmaputra River.

Short videos provide snapshots of these encounters, as well as footage of two cleverly constructed bridges he has crossed. The first was made of living tree roots and is likely to be centuries old, the structure forded a river near to the town of Cherrapunji in the state of Meghalaya. The second was an impressive 270-yard-long bamboo bridge that could be easily assembled and disassembled for monsoon season in the state of Assam.
