Out of Eden Nearing Seven Year Anniversary
Salopek’s epic journey is coming up on its seven-year anniversary and a fundraising drive is underway to finance the trip as it continues into South East Asia. The Out of Eden walk is looking for $31,000 to help with equipment, food, lodging and guide fees.
Currently, Salopek is making progress through the hills on Manipur in India alongside walking partner Hormazd Mehta. Thirsty leeches have been a problem as they pass through the countryside and Salopek has tried a local herb used by the Naga hill people to stem the bleeding. “Puthan” is a wild herb that can be applied dry to the wound.
As they have walked, they’ve seen how the state is changing. As the region develops, the virgin forest is being cleared to make space for highways. Salopek made a short video of one construction site, remarking that it’s a change that can’t be easily reversed.
