Mandalay to Yangon? Salopek Seemingly On the Move

Date: May 14, 2020
Approximate GPS Location: (16.78°N, 96.16°W)

As COVID-19 shut borders and limited movement, it seemed that Paul Salopek would be stuck in Mandalay for the foreseeable future. In late March he announced that he would pause and focus on writing while the pandemic took hold worldwide.

However, it now seems that he has made some progress after all. His latest posts are from Yangon, further south than Mandalay. For now, we are left to wonder when he made the onward trek.

From Yangon, Salopek has shared some of his thoughts regarding the pandemic. He hopes that humanity can use the shock of this virus to “help jolt us awake.” Humans are still “selfish, myopic, tribal” he explains, but perhaps this crisis can force us to make big systematic changes for the common good. Only time will tell if we can achieve his dream.
