A Fork in the Road as China Looms
Salopek is approaching an important crossroads, to complete his odyssey to Tierra del Fuego at the southern-most tip of South America he needs to head north towards the Bering Strait that separates Asia and North America. However, his route remains unclear. He will need to travel through either Russia or China, but both present serious bureaucratic obstacles.
Alongside two walking partners, Saolpek has now entered West Bengal, the final Indian state before he reaches the Bangladesh border. Time is running out to sort visa issues and continue through China. Earlier on his journey, he had already been forced to alter his route through the Middle-East, first by the war in Syria, and then by visa restrictions imposed by Iran which pushed him north into Georgia. It remains to be seen whether he can prove more successful persuading China to grant him an extended stay.
