A Fabled Afghan Emperor Marks Milestone 64
For the first time in over six years of walking, Salopek marked a 100 mile (160km) milestone at a “bonafide cultural landmark” in the state of Bihar, northern India.
Salopek arrived at the tomb of 16th century Afghan Emperor Sher Shah of Sur on a grey, rainy day. The beautiful tomb seemed rarely visited and Salopek sought out one of the mausoleum's guards to conduct his customary interview, marking another milestone on his long walk out of Eden.
“I’ve been working here five years. I love the beauty of this place. People of all kinds come here. Muslims. Hindus. It’s for everyone. I have no anxieties here. I never imagined I’d get a job in such a place. In some past life, I maybe had some obligations here. So I’ve come back to serve,” Rajesh Ram explained.
