Black Skies in Manipur

Date: November 03, 2019
Approximate GPS Location: (24.99°N, 93.41°E)

Salopek’s encounters with inquisitive locals have continued in Manipur, India. In the Tamenglong District, a farmer was keen to show him a collection of coins he had found at a remote jungle site. According to village elders the site was used to execute dozens of captured British and Indian soldiers by the Japanese in World War II.

Then, in Manipur’s foothills, Salopek witnessed the sky turn black. Some 30,000 Amur falcons had emerged from their roosts in the hills to hunt. The huge flocks migrate between Siberia and Africa every year.

Though he hasn’t been stopped in Manipur, Salopek has recently updated his map of police check-points. During his six year trek he has mapped every police stop and categorized them as friendly (green), investigative (yellow) or detained (red). You can see a snapshot of the 103 stops in the gallery.
