Mission Yangtze/Ash Dykes

Dykes Almost 3000/4000 Miles Down Yangtze; Now Through Major Mountains, Gorges

Date: May 30, 2019
Approximate GPS Location: (29.32°N, 113.04°E)

Dykes made his way through the largest and most downstream of China's 'Three Gorges', the Xiling Gorge. Other than the many miles through 'gorge'-ous scenery, there's also an area of riverside 'attractions'. Dykes talked his translator into jumping off the bungee jump tethered to him, despite the fact that she said she would 'never' do it and had a fear of heights. She was petrified but afterwards said it was “one of the best things I’ve ever done”. (See video 2 of 2 below).

Dykes then finally made it past the world's largest, but also highly controversial, Three Gorges Dam. He is now joined by walking partners, Tan, who is Chinese, a vegan and the first female to join the journey, and Mickey, a medical student from Mexico.

Dykes says he is averaging about 25 to 35 miles of walking per day and is close to completing 3000 out of the 4000 miles of the journey. Now after 9 months of walking in the mountains, he has largely made it past all mountains, past the massive Three Gorges and into the expansive floodplains region. He says that for the first time in his journey, "I’ve been able to see the horizon for 360 degrees". He reported that he has passed the cities of Yichang and Yueyang.
