Speeding Through Central America, Veyt Arrives in Guatemala

Date: March 15, 2023
Approximate GPS Location: (14.75°N, 90.46°W)

Last we heard from Jelle Veyt, he had just teamed up with his partner, Marie Heyvaert at Cerro de la Muerte, Costa Rica.

In mid-February they headed back to the main road to con concentrate on getting some distance done quickly. The road was long and mostly flat but they had to contend with some extreme wind. With gusts at 55mi/h, they flew along when it was behind them, but had to be extremely careful whenever the road changed direction to avoid being blown off their bikes.

Pretty soon they crossed the border into Nicaragua, which was largely flat except for the unmistakable outlines of occasional volcanoes.
On February 22, they stopped in the village of Tamarindo, near the city of Leon. The village is an educational project designed to help children in the area get technical education. Most of the population works collecting sea salt and the project helps broaden horizons and escape this dangerous work.

From Leon, they went back to the mountains to cycle a beautiful road and get some cool air. Soon they made an easy border crossing into Honduras. They were only there for a few days, partly because they were concerned about safety, and partly because they could quickly cycle on into El Salvador.

After only two days they crossed into El Salvador and headed for the coast to cover some distance, before heading back into the mountains for the Ruta de las Flores. “So happy to have taken it, despite the extra effort of pedaling this is a beautiful route. It takes you up to more than 1,000m [3280ft], along beautiful vibrant villages with good food and beautiful views,” Veyt wrote in a recent update.

Guatemala came next and the hills proved as tough as they expected. Climbing into the country, they have spent the last few days taking time off to do a famous volcano hike. Hiking up a nearby peak they watched the neighboring active volcano erupt.
