Crossing into the US, Veyt Takes on the Chihuahuan Desert

Date: June 16, 2023
Approximate GPS Location: (33.56°N, 112.12°W)

In mid-May, Veyt thought he was escaping the Mexican desert and riding into green hills. After a brief stop in Monterrey city he headed to Rancho El Sendero at El Potrero Chico, a climbing hotspot. There, he met up with some local climbers. “So much fun climbing some walls and I really needed some training here. It’s still a bit rusty after months of sailing and cycling,” Veyt wrote.

After some fun climbing, it was right back to the desert for Veyt. The approach to the Mexico-US border was tough, on May 22 he had constant rain, and he had to stick to the main highway for safety reasons.

The next day, Veyt arrived in the US, crossing into Texas. But his desert journey was far from over: “From here I’m crossing the Chihuahuan desert all the way to New Mexico, Arizona, and California,” he wrote. At the time of writing, he’s still going, working his way through Arizona and documenting the sometimes-strange frontier-vibe places he is encountering on the way.
