Pete Casey

Turtle-Egg Breakfasts; Charging Tapirs; Waist-Deep In Swamp Mud

Date: August 30, 2018
Approximate GPS Location: (4.06°S, 69.51°W)

Casey has reported a few gorgeous moments, a terrifying day, and a lot of interaction with animals in the past few weeks. Highlights were eating breakfast at a Ticuna community overlooking the rainforest. The breakfast quite startlingly consisted of turtle eggs.

He also enjoyed the recent full moon within the rainforest. Animals reported were "lots of toucans, macaws, spider and howler monkeys, otters, bullet ants and armadillos." He also reported hearing exotic birds deep within the rainforest that he had not yet heard in other parts of the Amazon.

On the more unpleasant end of the spectrum, he was forced to spend a day (7 hours at least) wading waist-deep through mud in swamps, an experience he characterized as "way out of his comfort zone" - and we all know where Casey's comfort zone resides! The other scary experience was during a thunderstorm when a charging tapir, a South American type of wild pig that can be dangerous, missed him by inches.

Casey is currently walking a stretch to the Brazilian town of Benjamin Constant and on to the Peruvian border.
