Getting Close to Amazon Source
Casey has been following the curves of the higher reaches of the Apurimac tributary of the Amazon River. Demographic-wise, the area he is traveling is still completely dominated by the Quechua indigenous people.
He has also been noticing that many of the villages and smaller towns have been completely deserted except for a minuscule few elderly inhabitants. Younger people have been flocking to cities and bigger towns in search of greater prosperity and better digital connectivity.
He also happened to stumble upon the village of Surimana, the home of Tupac Amaru, a revolutionary who is much revered by indigenous people throughout Peru.
Casey has begun making preparations to summit Mount Misma, the glaciated mountain calculated to be the furthest source of the Amazon River. It looks likely that, if all goes well, he will have summited the mountain and reached the source by his next blog post.
