Winnipeg A Major Journey Milestone

Date: June 25, 2018
Approximate GPS Location: (49.85°N, 97.29°E)

Throughout Maldague's trip from the icy Arctic south through Canada, he had focused on Winnipeg as a sort of milestone. Today he reached this milestone!

Even the cycling portion of Canada was a great challenge. It seems that he has had endless issues with the trailer he is towing behind his bike.

It all started when he first got off his skis and mountain-biked on a railroad from Churchill, north Manitoba. He found that the cargo he had been toting behind in a sled was just too heavy to carry in a pack on his back.

With no good options, it was at that moment that he found a baby carriage and fashioned it to tote his gear behind his bike! In Keewatinohk, he was able to upgrade to an actual bike trailer. However it was near Ponton that one of the tires tore apart, followed 37 miles later by the failure of the wheel bearings.

Maldague used Facebook to summon help and cars on the highway followed suit transporting goods for him! He was able to fashion further implementations to continue his journey. However, 60 miles from Winnipeg it was the trailer attachment that broke apart. Maldague again fashioned a makeshift solution.

It turns out that reaching Winnipeg is more than just getting to the biggest city. A new phase of his journey is about to begin - that of kayaking down the Mississippi River.
