Much To Learn Before Taking On The Seas

Date: March 13, 2019
Approximate GPS Location: (15.73°N, 88.95°W)

Maldague is about to begin his fourth mode of 'human-powered' travel, sailing, the other modes have been kite-skiing in the Arctic; cycling in Canada, the US and Mexico; and kayaking the Mississippi source-to-sea.

Maldague mostly seems to be an amateur at sailing and has been seeking to learn in preparation. On March 3 he met with Sigrid Greven, a woman who is also Belgian and had dropped everything in 2011 to sail around the world. Still sailing the world's oceans, Greven sails a boat called 'Lucky Bitch'. Maldague said she gave him a lot of advice and that he can continue to learn a lot from her.

Maldague's recent intermission from journeying has been due to him being fully embroiled in the mechanical legwork of getting a sailboat ready for sea. After purchasing the boat, 'Tsamaya' on February 21st (detailed in the previous update), he is now living on the boat moored in Rio Dulce, Guatemala, adding "it feels awesome not to have to pack and unpack my stuff every day".

First, he started with the electrical systems, and then with the winches. Maldague explains it well. "A winch is a mechanical device that enables you to put lots of traction forces on ropes, with minimum effort. They need to be serviced from time to time, otherwise, they can get stuck or loose. Three of mine were fully stuck and are now running smoothly! Their clicking noise echoes like a lullaby..."

In other news, Maldague celebrated his 30th birthday.
